When I found out that the title of our show was “THE FUTURE OF OUR WORLD AS IT IS KNOWN TO CARIBOU”, I was initially puzzled, but upon further exploration, specifically on the Caribou or the Reindeer, as it is more commonly known, I started to be excited about the true theme of the show.

Further reading on the caribou revealed that it was an endangered species that had lost a large amount of its population because of human intervention, diminishing land for breeding and grazing, and man’s rapacious destruction of its habitat.

I then related it to our own species, and the current ecological disaster that we have been experiencing: snowcaps melting, rising ocean temperatures, mega typhoons and hurricanes increasing in occurrences and more destructive wildfires and drought.

For my work, I wanted a scenario wherein one discovers the ruins of a lost civilization and goes back to the past thru the portal of a wooden window frame embedded on a wall.

We gaze at the last video clips of someone belonging to that time.. and we see a portent of our doomed future.

There are three windows, each showing separate video images like torn pages from a diary.

The images are grainy and faded-looking and it plays continually like a damaged movie reel spiraling out of control.

As the flickering images confront us, we realize that it is slowly disintegrating until it is just a pattern of light and shadows.

In the background, reflected on the surface of the monitor, is the shadow of the artist/viewer witnessing his demise.
